Like everything else in fashion, denim right now is all about variety and self-expression. Basically, wear what you like!

That said, there are still a few cuts, washes, and even prints that feel fresh, if not entirely new. Whether you are after a weekend wardrobe update or a new pair of jeans to add to your everyday arsenal, Rebecca Tay showcases five denim styles to consider this fall.

Skinny jeans have been relegated to the sidelines for a few seasons, but over the last several months, we’ve seen them finally re-emerge, looking more modern than ever. Perhaps it’s just that we’re starting to tire of the super-baggy, super-wide shape, but there’s something refreshingly chic about a more streamlined denim silhouette. Case in point: the High Rise Vintage Slim cut from Gap, which comes in two classic washes and looks great with a button-down shirt, loafers, and minimal makeup. When in doubt, keep it simple, right?

Gap, gapcanada.ca | $89.95

Relaxed silhouettes like barrel-leg jeans have been on the rise, and this pair by Agolde feels interesting and contemporary, yet also simple and timeless. Designed to hit right at the ankle or even just above (with a small block-heeled shoe, perhaps), the shape also offers a slightly cleaner, more minimalist look that pairs well with blazers and shirting — perfect for casual Fridays or nights out.

SSENSE, ssense.com | $370

There are those who would argue that leopard print is a neutral … and who are we to disagree? As seen on these baggy low-rise jeans, they channel the ‘90s look that’s still big right now, especially when teamed with a cropped white tee. For a more mature or office-appropriate look, wear them with a black blazer and smart tote instead.

MICHAEL MICHAEL KORS BELTED FLARED JEANS

Designers ranging from Tory Burch to Versace showed indigo and rinsed denim, and we’ve got our eyes on this dark pair by Michael Michael Kors. Bonus points for the fact that they transition especially well from day to night — a key selling point as we head into party season: just throw on a fancy top, a bold red lip, and you’re ready to go.

If there’s one thing we know, it’s that baggier, wide-leg cuts have been trending for some time. This pair by Mother, an American denim brand known for its refined washes and cuts, is made from 21 per cent pre-consumer recycled cotton and 17 per cent post-consumer recycled polyester, and features a high rise to really elongate your leg, while the true blue shade is nothing if not classic. Wear with pointed heels or boots to keep the silhouette long and lean.
